It’s 2009, and it’s the Friday of a long weekend. The Mythic Map Pack just dropped for Halo 3. You’ve got some Code Red and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos to fuel this weekend of digital debauchery. You zip open your CD binder and peruse the pages, deciding what’ll be the soundtrack to your tea-bagging terrorism. As Blood Runs Black? Suicide Silence? Whitechapel? No… tonight, we’re listening to It’s About Murder… by Execution.

Yes this is a 2025 deathcore release, but you’ll find no Lorna Shore nor Disembodied Tyrant here. This release seemingly retcons the entire history of deathcore since the mid-aughts, as if it was recorded then but never released. Everything from the scratchy band logo and cursive album title to the filtered, layered, ink-blotty (are those crows?) cover art screams MySpace. The production is tight and audible but not overproduced, other than the intermittent (and admittedly, sometimes hilarious) bass drops. With 6 tracks and a runtime of about 16 minutes, Execution gets to the point right away on this one – all meat, no fat. No introspective instrumental interlude. And no clean singing, of course. The closest thing would be a few spots of gang vocals. It’s About Murder… is just exactly the kind of good-ole-fashioned deathcore one might expect from this review thus far.

We start with the titular opening track and about 15 seconds of rising ambience (feedback and digital noise) before the ballistic bass drops and chewy chugs commence. It’s About Murder… strikes a very satisfying balance of dissonant and melodic elements. Compare the first minute or so of “When Disgusting Met Vile” with the switch-up at 1:25 in and you’ll see what I mean. Following those tracks is the only single released for this EP, and perhaps the most standout track, “If Cameras Didn’t Exist”. The alternating panning on the chugs layered with a repeating dissonant melody let you know you’re in the right neck of the woods. Crossing the midway point, the second half of the EP consists of tighter, more straight-to-the-point songs, featuring more gang vocals and bass drops and focusing less on layered, melodic passages. You could maybe say these songs focus more on the hardcore elements of deathcore over the melodic death metal parts of deathcore. “Sign in Blood,” “Six Found Dead” and “There’s No One Left” are all no-nonsense deathcore bangers.

If you're a deathcore fan looking for that good ole shit, this is it. You can't go wrong spinning It's About Murder… Don't sleep on Execution.
